Farmer, Mom, + 4th Grade Teacher
By day, I am a 4th grade teacher in Janesville, MN. By night and weekends, I am a farm mom and wife. I mainly help with preparing field meals and delivering them to our farmers when they need refueling. I enjoy bringing agriculture into my daily lessons at school and teach a lot about farming operations to my students, which is a passion of mine. Over the last 3-4 years, I have done a lot of work with Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom and have been part of their Educator Advisory team to help promote more agricultural resources to teachers in Minnesota. As an educator, I want to make sure that people (both children and adults) have accurate information and resources on farming so that they can be informed on questions that may arise. Education and agriculture are two of my biggest passions so when I am able to combine them together, it’s where I feel fulfilled.
Do you farm with family?
Yes, my husband farms with his uncle and cousins. My father-in-law is recently retired from farming with us, but still helps when needed.
What are your hobbies?
My hobbies include reading, spending time outdoors on our farm, baking, enjoying the kids’ sporting events, and drinking a good cup of coffee.
Why is sharing information about agriculture and farming important to you?
The most important thing that I would want people to know about our farm is that it takes a village to operate successfully. From field meals made in the kitchen by me to grain hauled in by my retired father-in-law, no job is too big or too small. It takes all hands to be successful in the farming business. This is why it’s important for me to share – farming and agriculture is much more than a farmer in a tractor. It’s an entire industry that affects each and every person on this planet and it wouldn’t run without farmers. To me, it’s important to share their stories, their experiences, and their knowledge.
Tell us a quick story from the farm.
My husband is a 5th generation farmer and we are raising potential 6th generation farmers! The over 100 year old farmhouse that our family of 4 just moved into this summer is the same house that my father-in-law has lived in for almost 60 years. He grew up in our house with his parents and 5 siblings. Our son, Oliver, sleeps in the bedroom that used to be both his grandfather’s and his father’s as young boys. Oliver is the third generation to have the same room!
