Animal & Crop Farmer, Finance Coordinator

My husband and I live in Somerset, WI where we are 6th generation farmers growing corn, soybeans and wheat. We also grow cover crops which include rye and a radish/clover mix. We have gradually switched over to a no-till type tillage system because of our sandier soil which helps reduce erosion and nutrient loss for our future crops. We live in our home which is surrounded by the family-owned land that we rent for growing our crops. We have also been growing numerous vegetables, squash, pumpkins, and cucumbers for the past years which we sell through the summer and fall.

Do you farm with family?

My fiancé and I are 5th generation farmers in Somerset, WI. My fiancé grew up farming with his grandfather and uncle. Growing up, my family had a flock of 80 sheep/raised lambs, turkeys, laying hens and pheasants, while also growing crops on their farm in southern Minnesota. It was my parents’ love for farming and animals that made me choose to stay in the agriculture industry.

What are your hobbies?

I compete competitively in Reined Cowhorse and Ranch Horse Versatility events along with the casual trail ride and training my own horses. My flower beds and garden are also my hobbies.

Why is sharing information about agriculture and farming important to you?

I love sharing about farming and the experiences of farming because most of our population is not involved with agriculture and I believe it is important for people to know where their food comes from and why we love to farm year after year.

Tell us a quick story from the farm.

Every year we celebrate harvest with our antique equipment by inviting close friends and family to partake in harvesting a couple fields of our crops to enjoy the old equipment we no longer use for daily work. We end our Saturday of harvesting with a stone boat tractor pull for all our friends and family to enjoy.
